Sort of, but it just keeps moving as well.

You get to a non-X login prompt? I thought your system is freezing while loading kernel modules

You get to a non-X login prompt? I thought your system is freezing while loading kernel modules
No, it gets to a useless prompt. A prompt means that it has failed. It is supposed to drop to a live desktop that allows for doing installs.

No, it gets to a useless prompt. A prompt means that it has failed. It is supposed to drop to a live desktop that allows for doing installs.
Ah ok, assumed something else when I had a look at the picture you posted above. Sorry, can't help here - you are probably much more proficient with desktops on Linux.

@scottalanmiller how about trying this. Found it in ask Ubuntu:
I carried out a fresh install of 16.04 on my ASUS GL552VW.
The only additional GRUB parameters I entered (for installation and normal boot) were:
nouveau.modeset=0To stop Nouveau from taking over.
Once I'd installed the nVidia 361.42 drivers, through the Additional Drivers tab in Software Updater, I had to disable Secure Boot. (Secure boot stops unsigned kernel modules loading)
With those settings, everything works. Touchpad, Skylake support, nVidia graphics @ 1920x1080, Wifi, Bluetooth, keyboard backlight.
Installation of 16.04 is much less hassle than previous versions.

I've moved on from that issue
Safe mode seems to bypass it. -

No, it is a quote from ask Ubuntu, I just can't format it while using my mobile

Still attempting that latest book. Nearly fifteen minutes of booting. Insane number of NMI Watchdog errors. Not sure if it is moving forward or not.

I know this likely isn't what you want to do, but why not just create a bootable / writable live USB (using a microusb) and chose to boot from that when needed?

That's where we are stuck. We can't get one of those to work. That's what this thread is trying to solve.

That's where we are stuck. We can't get one of those to work. That's what this thread is trying to solve.
Oh! I thought you were stuck trying to install to the SSD or Spinner, not having issues booting from USB.

You have to boot from USB or DVD to do an install. But they won't boot.
