        D&D Night.

I really need to find a replacement to hangouts.

We use Discord. The video sometimes bounces the client, but it is easy, and someone built a Star Wars: Edge of the Empire dice roller bot for it. So we can do initiative tracking and dice rolling right in it. I'm guessing there is something out there that is D&D compatible.

We used to use Roll20 with Skype, but the roller for EotE is subpar, and Discord had more functionality overall in one app. The only thing I miss are the maps, but that isn't as necessary with the EotE system since it is more narrative based.

@kelly I'm noticing the downsides of a map though too. When people can measure the grid they measure stuff out too exactly and it makes the game lame. Idk how to resolve it honestly but the last fight we had was the most boring experience of my D&D career because of it. There should be a range of accuracy, not hitting the head of a pin every time 😞

Yeah, I try to avoid playing with people who like that level of detail. We had some of those fights in our last Pathfinder campaign, but most of the people I'm playing with are more interested in the story (with breakage), than in landing the most uber damage.

This is two people's first campaign so they are playing it like a video game unfortunately

This is why I like to take away everything from players and make them play completely from imagination. No rolls, no numbers, just using their imagination and acting.

Once you give someone a character sheet and dice, it's all math from then on in.

I like the dice mechanics as long as it's kept simple... a roll for for damage and checks in a fight. Otherwise, just use your imagination as you follow the story.

Why even have them make that roll? I like to keep the fact that their are dice at all out of it. I think it fundamentally undermines the fact that the DM, not the dice, are in charge.

Having been playing D&D since the 80's and running my own campaign since 1999, I totally disagree with you.

The dice are wonderful randomizers that take the players out of their comfort zones.

Most people in free form game swill tend to certain actions and reactions based on their nature. They can do a little based on their character class and such, but their own personality will still win out in full free form role playing games.

The dice take this and create an enforced randomness that they have to react to.

I use Roll20 for the virtual board, but their WebRTC client sucks balls.

Hangouts has worked great for the voice/video, but it is about dead.

What about something like Jitsi Meet (https://meet.jit.si/)? It's free to use on their servers or you can host it yourself.

It's funny because they used to use Hangouts and determined that it wasn't good enough so they rolled their own.

Discord is decent for this. I was using it when I played Night at the Opera. I also use it for my Delta Green group that plays sporadically.
