... And I don't have to run a Windows server for vCenter server or upgrade manager anymore.

I haven't played around with VMware much. How does it work with vCenter? Does run in a VM on each hypervisor or completely separate from the hypervisors?

It is a virtual appliance. You can upgrade and migrate from an existing Windows version. You can run it on a single server.

Keep in mind that you're using displayport you can run several monitors off one output.

I know this, when I first deployed some HP mini desktop machines, they only had one DP port, but I needed to drive two monitors. This was a new setup, so I had to buy everything. I purchased two DP monitors, and had to buy a DP splitter (if you will) that provided two video outputs. I tried to purchase one again, and DAMN they are crazy expensive.

I need to look into DP monitors that have a second port designed for daisy chaining... something I might do for this project.

Another option is to just look into getting a larger monitor. 2 x 22" is not a huge amount of screen estate.

You could for instance go with a 34" 21:9 like Samsung. Or just go with something bigger like a 40" 16:9 4K.

LOL - do you know the price difference between those? We go from say $320 for two monitors to something like $600+ (often well over $1000). So sure, while it might be nice to have a single huge monitor, the price gap just doesn't justify it.

if you count snapshots usage and price vs vmware and you are familiar with KVM its a win/win ...

Sure, but it's a false comparison. The main competitors are Scale, Starwind, Simplivity, etc. They crush Nutanix in performance, ease of use, and price. Comparing Nutanix against a known bad alternative (3-2-1 with VMware) makes it look good, but that's like saying paying $100K for a Chevy Spark is a good deal because a Ferrari costs $300K. But that's not a good comparison. A good comparison is a $12,000 Nissan Versa which costs a reasonable amount and is still better than the Spark.

It's true that the Nutanix is likely an improvement over an inverted pyramid + VMware, both things you'd normally rule out as just bad design. Using a false comparison makes it look plausible. But when you compare it to industry baselines of "standard good" it stands out as expensive and under performing (and just a bad actor as a vendor.)

      They say it is supported...

      https://blogs.vmware.com/guestosguide/2019/05/red-hat-enterprise-linux-8.html

REHL 8 is - But using the drop down and selecting Fedora it says it isn't.

Either way, I'll just use REHL 8 and be done.

The drop down list told you RHEL isn't, either. Yet we know it is. ESXi is just broken.

That one doesn't actually tell me it isn't supported:

      alt text

But the other RHEL one does. So clearly it's broken if it gives conflicting information. In one case, RHEL isn't supported, then RHEL 8 is. But RHEL 8 is still RHEL.

I understand. I guess they don't update the dropdown in the software 😄

Then best to not use it and not to consider anything from it. Just skip it and protect yourself.

$250 seems pretty cheap for such a use... you expect what - 5 years out of it, so $50/year... seems reasonable.

It is. But taking 5 minutes to post a discussion was well worth it. I’ll buy an Acer also and see how it works comparatively.

Actually, depending on the possible cost savings, maybe not. If you buy two and compare them, that billable time could eat much of that savings. - Could, no idea if it will or not. Though I'll agree the post just for info sake was likely worthwhile.

$250 vs $150 is significant. I'm not talking single quantity.

Ok, so junction points don't support mapping to network path, symlinks do, and hardlinks can only be created for files, not folders. Try creating symlink and then create junction to the symlink and see if Crashplan can be fooled that way. So mklink /D C:\fake-Backup \\server01\Share\Subfolder and mklink /J c:\backup c:\fake-backup .

Hey thanks for all the help everyone, it is greatly appreciated.

I've decided to go with LAPS as this is part of an overall 'let's tighten up security' project I've got going and my thoughts were, you can't go wrong if you go with the Vendor's recommendation.

I'm distributing the LAPS client software via Startup GPO which is working well ATM. Half way through the setup, but have stopped coz the weekend started.

I'll take a look at Salt as I need to broaden my horizons.

      Thanks again folks.

Fyi, to deploy to clients you just need to copy the dll and register it with regsvr32. But good thing you're not trying to deploy it with GP's software installation features.

I get around these problems by using Startup & Shutdown scripts. I create a simple bat file that copies the required files to the local %systemroot%, then I install whatever it is that needs installing. This seems to work well for me.

NVMe drive for storage instead of SSD. It will be about 6 times faster from around 500MB/sec to 3GB/sec.

AMD black could be any number of CPUs. They're all slow compared to newer AMD CPUs though.

6 HD screens...maybe he would consider upgrading to larger 4K monitors instead. Each 4K monitor has the same resolution as 4 HD monitors. So 2x40 inch monitors has more screen estate than 6 HD monitors. And two or even three 4K monitors could be run from the same graphics card.

So that is would I would look into. Newest AMD CPU, 1 really good graphics card, NVMe for storage and new larger monitors.
