I think if they offered their product with some kind of backup to a cloud target it would be a little better. But I agree it is worth a shot for backup targets, etc.

I found it interesting that they were not trying to be a Cloud Backup solution. hell they are not even trying to be a backup solution. They are simply making a use for unused space.

There is a plethora of choice when it comes to cloud data storage. I think this may be a smarter move to skip it. Maybe a partnership for a sync to offsite kinda thing would work for them.

I could see them partnering with Box or Dropbox as a beneficial partnership.

I think they would be better served with real cloud backup, not a sync solution.

    Why do you say that?

What is your goal? I think we are struggling to picture the use case that you are picturing. If you have cloud storage, how are you using Aetherstore? And vice versa?

I find that if I set my DNS as the first task that I do, normally it is working by the time that I need it.

The DNS nameservers were already set. I'm hosting the server on my own hardware. It's waiting for that nameserver to propagate the info out to the world. Probably another couple hours and we'll be good. I just wanted the initial wordpress setup stuff done before the site hit the www.

One of the hardest things that I have found about getting people to try out something like this is actually that it is all too easy. Literally everything works so well and is so easy to do that it comes off as confusing coming from the Windows or Mac worlds. Even normal Linux is often "too easy" and ends up being confusing for that very reason.

I guess if I setup a script to dump the database to a specific directly on some schedule, I could then ensure I have that directory included in the git commit. This would give me a database version 100% compatible with the point in time git made the commit of the rest of the stuff.

@scottalanmiller agreed. Though I don't know how they could call it an IMAP connector if it's not syncing. They should just get rid of IMAP, though I suppose these days some mail services might not offer POP3 anymore.

Because IMAP is a protocol and does not imply syncing. Calling it anything but IMAP would be false. IMAP is just as correct when syncing as when not.

I'm going to have "actually, OneDrive is a backup" engraved on my tombstone. If you delete a file locally, or change it, you can restore an earlier version from OneDrive. The backing up is done at Microsoft's end, but it is still backed up.

Excellent. I was unaware that they were taking a full backup of that nature and not just a sync. Great to know!

Technically, I would say it as "OneDrive is backed up" rather than "OneDrive is a back up", but it makes it much closer.

I opened a case with Dell, once they called me back - they walked me through the procedure I mentioned above.

    Logon to server in question

disk management > assign the SRP a drive letter, make sure you can see system files, take ownership of system volume information > grant full control of system volume information

    delete the AAlog_* files

    Give ownership back to system

remove the permissions you gave yourself, starting with the files, then the folder itself

remove the drive letter you gave the SRP

Done - you should now have over 50 megs of free space in the SRP - now try to do your backup.

    good job dude

Direct to Azure is pretty nice. Would like to see Rackspace support too.
