I am doing my research for switch purchasing and came across optional timing modules for SyncE and 1588 PTP. At what point would this be necessary/why would you implement this?

When you need to do things like low latency trading or precision machine control. No normal company does this stuff. But when you work in trading systems and implement your own Caesium Fountain clocks because you need accuracy to a nanosecond, you need things like PTP on your network.

Thanks! I figured it was something I would never need based on reading the spec sheets on the standards but I couldn't find out why a network would need it.

I like the way that Wikipedia describes it. Paraphrasing: It's for networks that need a dedicated GPS or atomic clock on every node but can't do that for whatever reason so resort to this as the best that they can do under the circumstances.

Yeah I saw that too but was missing your description of what scenario would warrant that it be deployed. 🙂

Low latency trading is where I have seen it the most. The times are so low there that things like the width of a river causes noticeable problems for fiber lines!
