So this is a bit of a random thought, and more of a "is it worth bothering question"

I've created a clone of my XenServer Bootable USB, and want to test it, but I don't want to interfere or shutdown my existing production system.

Can I just plug this bootable into any old desktop and see if it'll light up? Should I expect any issues?

Why would even expect it to work? You are booting to different hardware.

@JaredBusch well I'm not sure if it matters, since the boot device is the USB.

I'm simply installing XenServer to USB.

I'm not certain if the hardware matters, much like hardware abstraction.

There is no hardware abstraction. This is the hypervisor itself.

Yeah I know, it's just the hypervisor, and that's my point I guess.

Can you move a Hypervisor from one host, to another without issue? I assume not from the response so far.

I think it's likely it will, assuming the booting mechanism is the same on both machines.

For example, you need UFEI to book GPT partitions and NVMe.

But, as I said I'm guessing the SD/USB stick will boot fine - of course it will bomb out when looking for the SR and the drive controllers.

Can you, yes 🙂 It won't damage anything. Will it work? Not likely. You can't do this with any other OS or hypervisor, you can't do it with Xen either. That's why Xen has to be installed rather than there just being an image that you run. The installation process is the process of customizing it for your hardware.
