Quite a lot, really. Considering we might use four different services all serving HD (1080p or even 4K) at once (Hulu, Amazon, Netflix and YouTube/Google) just for entertainment alone, it adds up really quickly. If each can deliver 30Mb/s, that means 120Mb/s is needed just to keep things working.
Then add in Steam downloads, GOG, Origin and similar. Even just consumer "needs" get really big, really quickly.
Consumer wise I agree - we can easily need 150 Mb or more connections. But in a business? that's not doing online backups? or remote syncing. Though I suppose those are becoming more and more ubiquitous, so some will say it's crazy to even talk about situations that don't have those things.

You've only seen 1 or 2 per second? I can download from Steam to saturate my 50Mb/s connection.

I'm on a 40 down connection and only get 1 or 2, time of day does not affect it. Maybe that's just in the UK though.

Yes, I have to self limit Steam to not interrupt other things in my house. I am in a very rural part of NY too.

Netflix uses 5 per second for 1080P though, if all 4 family members are watching 4K content at the same time that's a bit excessive.
Why is that excessive? We pay for the service, why would it be excessive to use it?

it took me over 30 days of continuously managing 20Mb/s connections to be able to download our Steam library partially while in the US last time. Steam will use more than I can get access to in Texas. And I need it as single game downloads can take a couple of days. Getting our library downloaded takes a super long time.
I have no idea how fast Steam will go, as fast as I can give it access to is all that I know. 20Mb/s at least for one download at a time.

You've only seen 1 or 2 per second? I can download from Steam to saturate my 50Mb/s connection.
I get 19-25mb/s on Steam

There are regions with great Internet, and regions with nothing. Texas is very hot and cold as far as Internet access. My house in Dallas can get 100Mb/s, the condo in Houston struggles to get 5Mb/s. My brother in laws place across town gets 300Mb/s.

I'm still waiting for my local service provider to build into my neighborhood, it's been like 8 months since they've started to accept orders, before they actually start.

As well as power and cooling costs. In fact I would be willing to offset some hardware and management costs as well.

I can get gigabit at my house in the middle of no where. Right now I'm just on the 150Meg plan though (software limited, it can be bumped up to a gigabit with a simple call).

150meg is $60, gigabit is $120. 2gig is $300. I don't think my CPE will handle 2 gig though.
