Planning to get Mini DisplayPort KVM

I have a Macbook Pro and Surface Pro being used at home and thinking of getting a KVM for this, so that i don't need to keep switching back and forth to connect to the same monitor.

DisplayPort has very high royalty and licesnse costs
I would almost used adapters to DVI first

Ya all of our KVMs are like $300-500 because of the DisplayPort, it's kind of nuts.
