Always has been, totally free and open source.

The website screams "trial" or "buy now"

            https://www.docker.com/what-docker

The only mention of open source is:

Docker containers are based on open standards, enabling containers to run on all major Linux distributions and on Microsoft Windows -- and on top of any infrastructure.

I suppose if I hit download the software will run and work without any licensing but unless you already know it's free, you might assume it's a trial for a £££ package.

I don't think Docker is going to eliminate VirtualBox, but it is going to make canned trials more the norm. Being able to download and launch a containerized trial version of software will make this so much easier.

I agree, two different shoes to fill. Both have a useful place.
