But it's better-suited to Americans, who have small plots of land, money for gadgets, want a garden, and have no time to deal with it.

Yup, dairies are pretty much 100% computer driven. Hardly any manual labour.
I'm hoping that the trend continues down the market as well. There are some smaller dairies that could benefit from this technology.

If the hobbyist had access to 3D printing, what would the costs fall to? The designs are out there to be printed.

Add on the auto driving things they have on the newest tractors, and you've got an automated system that can tend to hundreds/thousands of acres without the current need for keeping entire fields being the same crop. Don't even need a driver, just a manager/mechanic.

You would need a separate mechanism for harvesting large quantities, though.

You'd be surprised. A lot of large farms already have automated planting and harvesting. They use GPS and mapping tools to map out where the crops go. Sure there is a driver but all the guess work is handled by a computer.
