And yes,.. Paper (different form) still has it's place. unless you want to use the Three Sea Shells

That's your alternative, rather than the bidet with water?

A bidet with carefully calibrated lukewarm water and not that ice cold (or blistering hot) crap I usually wind up with.

How does that happen? I can't remember having a bidet be cold . You just, you know, put the handle in the correct position.

          Guess it depends on location.

Printing may go away as a thing at some point in the future, but it won't happen fast. We're still in a system whose principles require hard copy as a backup of a great many things... but that is shrinking. Either way, while I believe that HP has the right to protect their proprietary interests, that's going to bite them in the butt.

If I could, I would throw all of our printers into the recycle bin, after taking a bat, Office Space-style, to every last mother effing one of them.

That should be the most upvoted post on any topic, right there.

The new firmware update has cause many - including myself issue. In March 2016 I purchased new ink from iKong on Amazon and didn't really need it until about the end of July.

Last weeks update 'broke' the cartridges I have. Moving forward, I went back to my order to find that the item is not available any longer. There were other listed cartridges reported to work with the new firmware.

Going over the reviews from others that had purchased the iKong pack (950xl/951xl) reported having contacted iKong and had received new cartridges free of charge with updated chips which would work.

As these were less than 1 year old and the experience from others, I contacted iKong and received an apology and offer to try a new set.

The new set should be here next week, and I am out nothing. If they work it's still a good value for the $18.oo spent as the seller / maker has made good on their product.

We will see if they work and for how long. I'm not completely of the mind that it's iKong's place to apologize as the whole debacle starts with HP. However I believe they are going above and beyond in the attempt to make it right.

@gjacobse did they warn you before applying the firmware update? Do they give you a way to roll back?

There was no warning that I saw or recall. I don't print everyday, and though the printer sits just inches away, I don't recall anything presenting on the display. As for rolling back, I have not considered that option, but can of course check.

Did you update it or did it update itself? Or is this simply a time bomb?

No action on my part. printer did this upon it's own accord - which I suppose you could consider a time bomb. I'll take a look at the GUI in a moment - have to address an issue.

That's where it crosses into the clearly illegal territory. Designing a device to self destruct is illegal.

HP Driver and support page shows that the current firmware was published in March 2016, so this may not be 'completely new'

Several other searches report success with downgrading the firmware, but the download isn't direct from HP.

Crazy. I hope millions of people stop buying HP forever because of this. I'll certainly never do business with them again.

@Dominica just said that they have started a new ink subscription model that is likely why they decided to vandalize peoples' printers in the hopes of extorting more money from them through the new subscription model.

As a temporary work around I have re-connected the old HP LJ3030.. which isn't networkable. However I have a very old SimpleShare NAS that can act as a print server. it's not worked right in a while with the external USB devices, but is currently. So I am able to print (the UPS shipping labels) for the now.

Sometimes it pays to keep old tech around.
