And I thought that the Swiss rail trains were nice. The Japanese know how to do trains!

Wow! Only been on a train once but if I had the time to kill, I'd take a train everywhere over a plane or car. They are relaxing and comfortable and just awesome-sauce!

That first car would make me so SICK! I cannot face sideways when traveling on a high speed train. I barely managed the high speed across Spain. The swaying! Ugh!

I didn't realize Japan was large enough to need overnight cabins.

@Dashrender Please realize that the luxury trains are for "trips" and "vacations" not for normal use. Regarding the need for overnight trains. This is a very common form of transportation from one part of the country to another. You can book a night train from Tokyo to Sapporo and head to the station after work. Then you will be in Sapporo before you know it.

It's a huge country. Both physically and in population. North to south it must be similar to the continental US.

@dominica and I have done overnight trains from Madrid to Lisbon and from Viena to Venice. Neither one is that far. But a nice overnight train is a great way to travel.

Basic google search for "Tokyo to Sapporo train"

Of note, that Shinkansen listed. The Hayabusa, was Japan's fastest train in routine use as of last year.

If I use my fingers to gauge the length of Japan, going from end to end of the main body would be similar to a Seattle to San Diego trip here.

Also, that works out to about $250 in USD

Not bad at all. Very comparable to an overnight train in the US which isn't nearly so nice.

                              Basically yes.

The common quoted phrase is "1/3 the population of the US in a land area the size of California."
That is not exactly right, but makes it easy to see on a map of the US.
