      Hi ,

      I have installed Server 2012 R2 on IBM Server X3650 ( Type- 7979I2S).

From that i have created Two RAID 1 Arrays with Controller Card 8K-L.
      Logical Drive 1 - 64 GB2 - RAID 1. SAS ( OS )
      Logical Drive 2 - 1 TB
      2 SATA ( DATA )

Starting its works very smooth, but after some days RAID MANAGER software given a defunct drive error from any of the hard disk. I can re-insert the defunct drive and after that it's work OK.
Yesterday, 1TB Logical Drives going offline, and drive missing on server.
I have investigate the issue and after final step to force online the drive, take the backup of data and recreate RAID 1 for 1 TB*2 HDD.
I have no idea what is going wrong with this server.
I have updated the Server Raid 8K-L firmware to the latest version.
      BIOS - 5.2-0 (17003)
      Firmware - 5.2-0 (17003 )
      Device Driver - 7.2-0 ( 30261 )
Also updated the BIOS Drivers also, detail - IBM - [CGE149AUS-1.19]-, 2/11/2011.

Can any one pl. suggest on this ?

Most likely this is hardware issues, possibly with the controller and possibly with the drives. Have you updated the drive firmware in addition to the controller firmware?

I have updated controller and BIOS drivers, i am not able to find hard disk firmware. ( Like server has already SAS and SATA drives working )

As IBM update express utility above server not found we have to add manually from list, but before that i am not sure that it's perfect driver. This server already in Production.

So can you pl. share the driver download details for this server.

          IBM System x3650 -[7979I2S]-
          System Serial Number: 99D9029

Hard drive firmware would be a key culprit here. Not sure where to find the updates, can you confirm that the same firmware from those drives is working in the other server? And is the controller firmware the same on the other server?

I don't have another server available.

Oh okay, I thought that you were saying that you had these same drives working on another server. I misunderstood.

If this is an original X3650, it's 10 years old. Hardware issues aren't a surprise.

From two days ago i have just created a new array. pl. sugest me on this,

The options are pretty much limited to what was given.

Update the firmware on the RAID controller
update the firmware on the drives

                      replace RAID controller
                      replace drives

I agree. You have a hardware problem here. You might get lucky and have firmware fix it. If not, you need to replace things. Easiest is probably to replace the server.

OK @scottalanmiller - since you mentioned replacing the server - what do you think the average server life should be for an SMB?

8 years is good, ten years is okay if you are not replacing parts. Once you are paying for spare parts, the economics of keeping an old server generally vanish.

Check the battery in the Raid Controller, perhaps is empty.

                                  Hi All,

As per finding, There is no available online hard drives update for drives behind an ServeRAID-8k or ServeRAID-8k-l SAS controller.
After i have found the ISO image for Hard drive update that was only available for SAS HDD, I have update the Hard drive firmware yesterday, and hopefully it was all working fine from yesterday,

SATA HDD Firmware not available for Server RAID 8K,8K-l card, ( Currently installed SATA HDD Model - ST1000DM )

                                        Hi All.

After upgrading the firmware of hdd, its not helpful.

at any time any of the sas or sata hdd may gone faulty.

Now i have to decide add on raid controller on to this server.

So can anyone suggest me the controller that supports RAID 5 also.

Thanks in advance for your support.

                                        Thanks,

All non-hobby RAID controllers support RAID 5. I actually have never heard of any RAID controller of any class that doesn't support RAID 5 with 20 years of working with RAID controllers. One must have been made at some point in history, but I've literally never heard tell of one.

A quality RAID controller is not cheap. Even the most entry level one will be worth more than a ten year old server. I would replace the server with one that comes with a RAID controller already.

If you are in the US, xByte makes this super affordable for Dell and now HPE servers. Outside of the US, I normally advice SuperMicro.
