Trying to do an install of the latest openSuse Tumbleweed on VirtualBox but am getting errors. Either DHCP failures with the network or just all out crashes on startup. Anyone gotten this installed and know what configuration should be used to get it to work?

Haven't used Virtualbox for years. Only KVM/Xen/VMware here.
Why use it when the alternatives are free and perform better? There's also HyperV…

Maybe the only caveat is the reduced gaming performance on Windows after the HyperV installation, because the Windows Dom0 use the VGA passthrough, not directly.

I run Linux on the bare metal, desktop in a VM is less than ideal. Not seen Linux on Hyper-V get GPU passthrough, does that work?

Which heavily impacts the Linux desktop as I use Gnome 3 which uses GPU acceleration.

I'll test it in VirtualBox on my laptop.

Running from VirtualBox 5.1.18, it crashes before it even gets to the installer.

Ya I also haven't used VirtualBox in forever. I just use KVM on my laptop.

That may have been me fat fingering the boot menu. It's booting to the installer now. Where are you having a problem with it hanging at, @scottalanmiller ?

I try to explain that clearly: standard Windows on bare-metal of course use the GPU directly. After the installation of HyperV, the GPU is passed to the Windows Dom0 by HyperV, in a sort of passthrough. It's documented that this reduce the gaming performance of the Dom0.

Of course graphical-intensive desktop in a VM is not optimal at all. VMware Workstation and Fusion are getting it right, but…

When things go well, it hangs unable to get DHCP. There is no static IP configuration option that I can find and it can't get to the web server to download itself so....

For just the Desktop stuff, VirtualBox usually does ok for me. Games and other stuff, not so much.

Ah well... I did the install from the Snapshot-20170320 iso image and didn't have any problems. You can do an install from only the DVD and then add the online repos after you get the system installed.

Try it with NAT and see. I usually use NAT on my laptop and then ZT if I need access to the VMs from outside of my laptop.
