@irj Try and change her mindset that just because that one is more, is it that much better quality to pay more for it.

I've been winning battles throughout our relationship, but I have yet to win the war. I have gotten her shopping at thrift shops and second hand stores which I know she would have never done before we met.

I have gotten her to see the big picture and she will now buy something for $200 instead of $300, but not $2 instead of $3. Which actually add up to be alot more money in the long run.

You sir are impressive. These are battles I don't think I'll ever win. I fight the good fight but have yet to win even one.

It all started with a couch actually. Of course she wanted Kane's or some other big name expensive furniture retailer, and when I told her it wasn't in my budget and I'll be damned if I ever in my life finance a couch. She then started looking at junky retailers like ikea, and some other local junky overpriced furniture places. A few days later I came home with a couch from the thrift store that I bought for $250 that was very similar to what we were looking at for $2500.

That was the biggest win I've had. I have nothing against $2500 couches, but we have two kids under 3 years old so anything we get will be trashed anyway.

Indeed. Well played. Sadly my last couch I paid about a grand for, that being said it's about a 2 grand couch. But still not a victory like a $250 couch.

After that we picked out a love seat and chair. We ended up getting everything for about $400. Then we bought a new house and she didnt want to take any of the furniture because it had to be a different color.

Then she went to big lots and spent $800 for a couch and $400 for a chair. They are garbage. We havent even had them a year and they are shit. the chair is falling apart and couch is losing its cushioniness everywhere.

      So I guess I lost...

We have a furniture store about 2 hours from us. It's a wholesale store that has been moving into the retail space. They hadn't, when we were there, figured out retail pricing yet. So we were able to buy two couches and a love seat for ~$1500. The primary couch we use has the same problem that your's does, we know how to fix it... just haven't yet.

IKEA furniture is actually fairly decent. The real hangup most people have with it comes down to it is not "heirloom" or I can't keep it for 40 years and pass it down to my kids.

Well fuck that shit, I don't ant my parents' 1970's furniture. I don't care if it is perfect condition solid oak.

My wife is used to me seeing marketing and branding as negatives and knows that I react pretty negatively to paying for brands. I've trained her well. She'll go for generic every time.

@irj I will setup a store and offer the generic brands at a high cost than the name brand, not a lot higher but higher. You can then order from my store and I will give you back some of the money. It will still be cheaper than the name brand that way for you. It is a win win.

I read some article about gender roles and some study suggested women are more likely to test their male counterpart. Almost like a cave man DNA leftover.

So young men are encouraged to be financially irresponsible to please their significant other. The same as women are expected to be fawn over the man's deep pockets and generosity.

In reality if a man just does what a man does it works out. Save that money, don't give in, don't go out of your way too much. The woman feels secure because you are not easily swayed and also can speak her mind. Compromises are made. Two people become more alike over time.

Also I have read women are more about NOW. Men like to plan. If you are shopping for a house you are saving to buy next year the woman has no interest whereas the man relishes the planning process.

Disclaimer: This was written with no regard to other marriage configurations or mixed gender roles.

That's not quite it. It's delayed gratification and investing. Women look for payouts today. Men look for payouts tomorrow. But one does not plan more or less than the other. Planning versus perceiving is a different trait.

For example, I'm not a planner, but I am an investor. I do everything for payouts "someday" but make no plans as to when and where.

I was taught women are more mature, yet I would say this is a maturity issue. But, I have had a lot of bourbon in me at this fine hour...

I was taught that women reached their maturity level faster.
