If you were to upgrade, would you stick with the ERX for home use? I’m pretty sure I will, but wanted another opinion.

I use the ERL for home. But pretty much six of one, half a dozen of another.

Any reason you went lite vs X originally?

      X didn't exist yet.

And you didn’t know the future? That’s disappointing. 🙂

I wouldn't want the X anyway, I don't think that it is as good.

The ERX is a great device as long as you a prepared to throw it away. For the price, it can easily be considered throw away.

Without a console port, there is no method to recover one like the ERL has.

Also, I do not want a switch on my router. My router should have routed ports.

So the ERL is my go to.

Exactly my same logic, plus the "the X didn't exist when I bought mine" bit.

Good points. My intro to the Ubiquiti line was the ERX. I never install those in business settings, but for home, it’s what I use. Perhaps it’s time to upgrade to the lite for home.

I think my ERX is bricked. Attempted a firmware update via the GUI as per usual. It failed. Rebooted... now it doesn’t respond at all. Factory reset doesn’t help either. I’m pretty sure it is bricked unless I can figure out a way to console to it ( involves soldering a console cable to pins on the board.) Did this ever happen to anyone else with the ERX?

My first go at an ERX was weird. I thought I had last it, and I'm trying to remember why. For home I've grown to like the USG. Easy to use the mobile app to block my kids internet at night when they won't get offline. I've used the ERL because ERX wasn't out but I also had fiber and it can handle a higher througput and PPS than ERX and also USG if I'm not mistaken. In Ohio though 100mb is as good as it gets.

Can't imagine there isn't a way to reimagine it. Have you opened it up?

                      Haven’t used the USG yet.

I did open it up and there is nothing other than the 4 pins I mentioned. There is a way to solder a serial cable to it for console access. But I don’t feel like spending time on that. It looks like others have done it before though.

It maybe something wrong with me but I would do just that, and that is what I was leading up to.

It's not about the $$$ it's just about the money and the waste.

Yeah, I’d have to get a special cable. If anything, I’d keep it around as a spare if I’d get it fixed.

So circling back... I'm getting an ER-Lite. However, I did find a fix here: https://community.ubnt.com/t5/EdgeMAX/ERX-ERX-SFP-System-Recovery/m-p/2056921 I'm going to try this regardless.

All you need is one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QT7LQ88/

So circling back... I'm getting an ER-Lite. However, I did find a fix here: https://community.ubnt.com/t5/EdgeMAX/ERX-ERX-SFP-System-Recovery/m-p/2056921 I'm going to try this regardless.

All you need is one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QT7LQ88/

Post pics if you do it, would be interesting to see!

$7 part to maybe fix a $45 unit. Might not be worth the effort.

@fuznutz04 Same method to fix bricked APs, that's how I have done it sometimes is not worth it if there is a part that needs to be soldered.
