Move Linux VM from Windows Host to Linux Host

I am running VMWare workstation 12.5 and I would like to migrate a VM from a windows host to Ubuntu host. I am debating whether I should purchase VMWare worksation or move to another solution.

What VM platform do you want to use on Ubuntu? VMWare Workstation?

I've been thinking on that one as well, moving from MS Hyper-V on my laptop to an actual server. I was just considering tarballing the system and moving it all over.

I know VirtualBox can read vmdk files. I think with KVM, you use qemu to convert the vmdk to qcow2.

Yeah, that's not really possible because Ubuntu is not a VM platform.

I'd convert the VMWare Workstation VM to a qcow2 and run it on KVM in your Ubuntu host (if you must use Ubuntu).

How determined are you to stick with VMware? Do you see yourself moving this VM back to a Windows host down the road?

It might be right to say - migrate a VM from VMWare Workstation to KVM running in/on Ubuntu
or
migrate a VM from VMWare Workstation to VirtualBox running on Ubuntu

I am mostly trying to figure out how the transition will be if I decide not to go out and buy VMWare workstation for Linux, and if my performance will be mostly the same.

Why pay for something when VirtualBox probably does it for free? If VMWare Workstation solves a problem for you that VirtualBox does not, then yes, buy it.

This is the opposite of what your title and OP says...I have no idea what you mean.
Part2:
The "host" is VMWare Workstation.So you want to move from VMWare Workstation (that is running on Windows), to VMWare Workstation (that is running on Ubuntu)??? Or the other way around as you stated in Part 1?

Buy VMware Workstation... It's so worth the $250 or whatever it costs now. We had a couple slow weeks a while back and I migrated all of my VMware Workstation VMs to the built in Hyper-V on Windows 10..... it was an absolute nightmare.
Workstation makes things nice and easy.
