I guess my question is why use that specifically instead of something else? What benefit does it have?

Since it's just SSH it's installed on literally every Linux box in the world by default.

It is poitn to point and does not need a third party service.. Drop box and the like are sync services with some sharing capabilities.

THey are not file transfer services.

I'd much rather use Nextcloud than SFTP personally, but that is for a few different reasons. We are almost entirely Windows here, even though @coliver made a good point. Also, I have to transfer files to people who have never used SFTP and generally don't get it. Installing a client and changing port numbers is beyond some of the people that require the data. It would be so much more conducive to just provide a link with a password and expiration date. Idk.

You were clearly told the difference between those tools. Just because you cannot understand, does not invalidate the difference.

I understand the difference between the tools. I commented on why I would want to use Nextcloud over it for my specific use-case.

No client needed. No port stuff needed. And not at all related to the question.

It's like asking what's the best way to fix and car and the answer being "I'd rather just eat dinner."

                            It's a typo.

But your info on ports, clients, etc. are based around the typo. Your description doesn't fit with SFTP.

                                freeFTPd

freeFTPd is a FTP/FTPS/SFTP server that enables user to access remote files over TCP/IP network such as Internet. Unlike FTP, FTPS and SFTP protocols provide security and strong encryption of data - great for insecure network.

                                Very easy and works well.

Nothing has been built into Windows until this year.

Built in? Not to my knowledge. OpenSSH on Widows was not around when 2012 R2 was released

Not built in until 2016. But Microsoft made it for 2012 R2, it's just a free Microsoft provided component rather than built in.

Same with Windows 10. It was not built in until 1803. I was an add on from 1703 (I think)
