Seems like a lot of tie in. What if you don't want to use the backup appliance any longer, but want to use the cloud or vice versa?

Except backups themselves are tied to the backup solution.

You have to have Unitrends to read Unitrends backups stored anywehre. Cloud or not.

      Same for Veeam.

And worth clarifying as I'm sure you're typing it now. Yes Veeam or Unitrends could also be the cloud provider. But changing one piece shouldn't restrict your options for using or changing the other pieces either.

Like Going from Veeam as the backup tool to Unitrends and then losing access to your Veeam Cloud backups.

Uncoupling these services is a positive, not a negative and any backup solutions provider knows this. It's when they are building and promoting their own backup and cloud solutions.

To make it more difficult to uncouple your services or migrate away entirely.

Looking at the Veeam scenario. If I create a SAM-SD as my Veeam repository for local backups. Can someone point me to what middleman software I should be looking to replicate those local backups to the cloud on the SAM-SD to Backblaze B2? This is easy with a Veeam cloud connect partner since I can do this within the Veeam console, but what about going to a third party cloud backup provider?

@magicmarker you could easily use the CLI it's a single line command and just have it run daily/weekly or whatever.

Alternatives include any solution that works with BackBlaze. Like CloudBerry (Not an endorsement, just one I recall off the top of my head)

I use Duplicati. The lazy me likes the web based interface it provides.

With duplicati aren't you forced to use duplicati to restore because it isn't a sync client. But a backup client?

              Duplicati FAQ

Q: Can Duplicati store plain files instead of inside compressed folders?

A: No. Duplicati is a backup tool, not a file sync tool. If you simply sync your files, you need to be certain that the system that you are storing the files on can handle the same as your local files. For example you cannot store data from a case-sensitive filesystem on a server with a case-insensitive file system.

@magicmarker If you look at amazon s3/glacier you can use their VTL that integrates directly with Veeam. I am currently just using a local NAS with a utility running on Windows that maps a drive to an S3 bucket. I then have a comparison software (Beyond Compare) that will copy the backup files to S3 based on scheduled tasks. It works well, but I would like to move to the VTL option.

Clicked in and saw the screens of B2 and jsut posted. my bad.

I'm now doing a U-turn and looking at Veeam again. My new plan is to go with Veeam Enterprise. My Veeam repository will be a SAM-SD for local backups. Then for $80 I can install Cloudberry on the SAM-SD and replicate Veeam local backups to BackBlaze B2. Thanks everyone for the insight. Thanks for steering me in the right direction. The Unitrends deal was looking good on paper, and didn't like having to make a decision based on the Unitrends sales rep year end numbers. Let me mention that the Unitrends sales staff are absolutely relentless. Almost as annoying as Know4Be before sales reps.

CloudBerry, or just a script. No special tools needed to send things to B2. B2 provides libraries for it.

Using the API it's just a direct copy, you can do changes etc with it as well if you wanted. But the default sync is a direct copy.

They are full on copies which is why I always, always, always, keep saying that things like CBT and remote reassembly are important.

Veeam can do that with "standard" setups where there is a Veeam agent running on the remote storage.

But how Can I have something like this done when it is a file copy.

Let's forget remote and just focus on how Veeam does backups.
First it performs a full backup.
Then everyday it performs an incremental.
                                        Great, simple and easy.

But then it hits the retention period you set for full backups.

So no it makes a new incremental for the day.
Then it takes the oldest incremental and merges it back into the full backup.

This means you now have to offsite a new full backup and an incremental today.

                                        Goodbye bandwitdh.

Now for something like a remote Veeam repository, Veeam simply sends todays incremental like always and then tells the remote agent to rebuild the full just like it did locally. I assume it has some built in checks but honestly never looked that close. SO the new full is created on the remote erpository without having to send a new full.

That kind of process does not work with b2 storage.

So, the question for any product that lets you tie in a cloud target is, how does it handle this?

Looking at the Veeam scenario. If I create a SAM-SD as my Veeam repository for local backups. Can someone point me to what middleman software I should be looking to replicate those local backups to the cloud on the SAM-SD to Backblaze B2? This is easy with a Veeam cloud connect partner since I can do this within the Veeam console, but what about going to a third party cloud backup provider?

CloudBerry, or just a script. No special tools needed to send things to B2. B2 provides libraries for it.

Cloudberry is a backup solution itself. You would use that to manage your backup scheudles and such as well as to send the data to offsite storage.

Cloudberry does exactly what I was talking about in my previous post by the way.

@JaredBusch Very nice. Now would install Cloudberry on the Veeam server, or the SAM-SD to replicate to Backblaze B2?
