@mlnews : Where were you yesterday? Had a client get hit with this. 1 user of ~50 could not access their network shares on the 08 R2 (I keep asking them to budget for its replacement.. sigh) server so I had ASSUMED it was a client issue.
Noted that a bunch of Win 10 patches had applied that morning and spent time removing them. No dice.
Again, considering that everyone else had no issue I was focused on the client end of things.Finally inspected the server and noted patch KB4480970 applied (no WSUS, RMM, or other tools on this server -- again, sigh) which looks like it may be the culprit.
Removed the patch and rebooted and it took an hour for the server to finish "applying updates and shutting down" meanwhile everyone is offline...
Upon reboot the single workstation could connect and the others could as well.
Note: this was NOT an administrator account nor an administrator share but a regular workstation accessing "public" shares. I have NO IDEA why only 1 user was affected but c'est la vie.. That's windows for you.
P.S. Registry entry did not fix it. The link that @mlnews posted stated that the reg entry was not yet verified and I can say that it did squat (in this instance at least)

About time Microsoft started to release those Updates that harms Windows 7 but not 10.
I expect this year will be the year of botched Windows 7 updates. -
Still have one windows 7 machine here and had issues. Removed update and all was fine.
A client has 2K8 R2 server which had issues with update also. Affected local users and also RDP users. Removed update and all is well.
Tried using the Reg Key but did not work in either situation. Also, all users, whether Admin or local accounts had issues.

In actuality, I have had very few issues with updates. Maybe I am darn lucky. I do try to keep my servers limited to simple roles so limit possible issues.

I haven't had a massive issue caused by updates in a while - long while. But a single machine here or there - yeah, those problems seem to come up all the time.
Even though my machine stem from a single image - the moment users start using them, they all become snowflakes and it's crazy how they break differently.

They don't have admin rights - beyond that, I'm not sure what you mean?
I'm not going to lock it down like a kiosk.

We rearmed & re-registered the devices with our KMS server. It did require a reboot, though.

On KB4480960, MS has a link to a patch in the Windows Update Catalog - KB4487345
I reinstalled the update along with the patch and my Windows 7 machine no longer has the issue (so far at this point).
None of the fixes worked for me except the patch.
