@Dashrender That's what a dedicated label printer is for. They suck even harder than standard printers, but are so nice once they're working.

OK - So we looked into that option. The departments need 10+ labels at a time. The EHR is unable to send 10 label print requests to the label printer in one click. Instead, the user has to click print 10 times. Management has said - that is unacceptable.

      Therefore label printers are out.

We even looked at the option of them copying the data manually into the label printer software, then choosing 10 labels, click print once - but this introduces several issues

      1. a lot more manual labor (even more than clicking 10 times)
      2. Introduces a place were errors can be introduced to the printed data

This option was also shot down.

For label printers we use Dymo and Sii with Digi USB anywhere. 90% of the time all is good until the Digi software freaks out and screws up the print server.

My issue is with printed envelopes. I know this is going off topic, but do your Canon printers have envelope feeders? If so, do they work?

Then they'll just be spending money on wasted labels. So long as management knows and you have the documented evidence, your job is done. When they ruin more printers/toners/drums, you get to laugh and say "I told you so"

No, we don't have envelope feeders.

I too use Dymo labelers in a lot of places, but I use the Dymo branded print servers. They are $125/ea, but rarely have a problem. And when they do have an issue, 99.9% of the time a reboot solves it.

So.... Am I being overbearing by not giving them their old printer back? Or am I likely doing the right thing for the company?
Again, I realize I likely need to do all the maths to make sure that giving the old one back under the best circumstances is actually saving us money... but there are still the other mentioned issues.

I will look into these. Be glad you don't deal with envelopes. HP use an "envelope" paper tray now. UGH what a POS these are. The spring inside is not strong enough to push up the envelopes against the rollers which caused misfeeds daily.

                    ings - blah blah blah)..
So my question is - am I being overbearing not giving them their old printer back and letting them use it to continue with their old process?
My concern with that is - the cost is significantly higher per page - Canons - 0.9 cent/page vs 2.1 cents page. Also, I would require them to have two devices - the old unit just for labels, and the new one for everything else - of course you know users - they'd likely not use the new one, i.e. they would refuse to change the printer as needed. Also what happens when that unit dies? Buy another? how do I know it won't have the same issues the Canons do?
Is this literally just a math game?
The current solution is that everyone is now required to use full sheets of labels, even though they only need 10 labels off the page. And no, there is no way to make a single sheet print 3 p

They stopped making printers like they used to do, I bet if you bought new HP model it will fail as well. They expect you to shed 2000$ for big printer to print a piece of paper correctly, man by now we should be able to print stuff with our minds

wooo - who'd a thunk it? JB saying something nice to someone 😛

Thanks, In this case I was ready to be considered overbearing... much less so than the issue I had last week with a software package and their requirements - and the way they worded it... anyway..
                        Thanks.

It happens. The FFS are just more memorable.

Whooah, hold your horses here. There are plenty of label printers that could do that. You may not want to pay the price of a real label printer and you might not know that such a thing exists, but that doesn't change reality.

This is not a hardware issue. This is a EHR software issue. The vendor would need to change their software to do this - could they? likely very easily, but will they? unlikely. They only seem to care about advancing new things, not fixing, improving existing things.
