We are looking to purchase a brand-related domain that is already registered by someone, but parked. The page says that they are willing to sell for $12K.

Anyone have suggestions for using someone to negotiate and secure the domain?

        I have used GoDaddy before.

I purchased a domain for a client (on their account, etc) with GoDaddy's service. We low-balled an offer (~80% of asking price), they refused, we settled on a price.

Domain was listed at $3,370 and had never been used. Was registered in 2002 and parked.

In 2018 we offered $2,700 via GoDaddy's service. The seller refused.
We offered $3,100. The seller accepted.

Purchase completed through GoDaddy and then domain moved to our own registrar a few months later.

Edit: here is the email I sent the client..

Maybe they can do something about it?

I recently secured a domain from a company (buydomains.com) that had previously registered it and had it listed for sale. It was listed for $2,288. I forget my initial offer, but it was either $500 or $750. They countered @ $1,716.

I offered $1,000 and explained that this was the max I was authorized to spend. He was able to "take it to management" and get it approved. I'm sure we both were being less than honest, but the bottom line is that you should be able to negotiate this yourself.

$12k seems really high. Can you share the proposed URL?

Sharing the domain name in a public forum is a terrible idea...

Yeah, that would only increase the interest and price. Sorry.

Thanks, but the domain seems to have been registered for quite awhile prior to us forming this brand. It is just a lack of due diligence or caring by marketing and management from the get go.

Ah, yeah. Well it was worth a shot.

Agreed, just search engines seeing it discussed, even if no human sees it, will easily drive up costs and improve the seller's selling position.

Only works in the case of bad faith. In his case, if the domain was pre-registered and in use (not just squatted) and the marketing people are trying to use that existing trademark, their attempts might be the ones in bad faith because they have a responsibility to see if that trademark is in use already, and trademarks like copyrights are automatic (but hard to prove.)

Actually bad faith does not preclude squatting. If the squatter purchased before you ever had a any registered branding, there is no case against them. Bad faith kicks in against squatting only if you can prove it affecting your previously registered brand.

I was saying bad faith in the other direction, attempting to start a business under the same name as a domain name that was already in use.

He clearly states it's for a brand, not a company.

Purchased and parked is not in use. It is “available for the right price.”
