More of the world than anyone in the SMB space realizes runs on Java. Desktop Java usage is trivial and fringe. Java is the backbone of the biggest datacenter operations, the biggest custom software for enterprises. Java is everywhere, but not where you are looking. End user devices is not where Java shines. Java shines on the giant servers powering the data going out to all of those end user devices. Java remains super important today.
The big new release in Java 8.... lambda expressions making the LISP and Ruby crowds happy.

As long as the server side doesn't suffer the horrible security flaws that the desktop does - What difference does it make what the back end runs? I don't really want an answer, it's just a thought exercise.
