I found this server on ebay.
      http://www.ebay.com/itm/SuperMicro-933T-2x-AMD-Opteron-250-2-4Hz-8GB-RAID-15-Bay-SATA-Storage-NAS-/221693812159?hash=item339dfb1dbf

Thoughts on using it for a NAS box? Use CentOS on it?

Not a bad box. Definitely looks low end and older, but for a cheap file server it is a pretty decent deal. Dual controllers, several full size hot swap bays, more than enough CPU and RAM for storage.

OpenSuse would be my default starting point. CentOS and Ubuntu are fine too. The OS you choose will be based on your intended usage patterns.

I'm looking or an inexpensive solution for a NAS for a Plex or other media server for the house.

As far as I can tell this unit can take standard 3.5" drives. Should be a good base for this storage.

hmmm.. max logical drive size is 2 TB, I'll have to see if there is a firmware update for that.

Maybe I should dump this idea and get a ReadyNAS 104. Looks like a 4 drive unit can be had for around $160, as long as I do any processing elsewhere, this looks OK.

Would be a lot smaller and quieter for home use.
