This model does make sense. The only other option would be to put up pay walls on all websites out there, and you would have to pay them directly to gain access to their content.

A few places might manage to leave their stuff open, private blogs, etc, but for the most part news and other typical journalism would die a quick death as most people are unwilling to pay for it. Though, in thinking that through, what we'd probably end up with is a what we had 20 years ago, newspapers, a collection of writers, etc that all work under a single corporate umbrella. So you'd subscribe to one of these services and only see their tiny portion of probably slanted views.

Well the people ultimately in charge that are allowing them to operate this way are the shareholders. And they are definitely being punished now. You can't change the shareholders but you can make sure that they are not getting your money.

Yeah I was wondering how he was going to handle that ALL manufacturers today are pretty much guaranteed to be doing some sort of tracking. Granted that tracking is so they can make the product better.

The author also didn't mention if they did a fresh install of Windows when they received the machine - to me that was his first downfall, but the fact that Lenovo has already shot itself in the foot, this doesn't help.

Yup, the problems that we had looked exactly like someone using a shim to proxy data somewhere else (aka a man in the middle attack.) Most man in the middles will break socket.io that MangoLassi uses. This is the same thing that used to cause Untangle and Watchguard devices to break.

Formatting and installing a non-Lenovo Windows 10 image fixed things.

I will assume you have tried more than one network/gateway. I have had some overprotective gateways block actions like this in the past.
