You don't know JS free open source book series is probably one of the best resources too. It explains how JS works, other than explaining how to program it in a nice way.
I think that if someone understand well how a programming language works, then he should know how to program it in the proper way, no? 🙂

Ya for digital stuff, it's awesome. I can see why people don't use it for print much because of the lack of CMYK but I did design these labels for my buddy's brewery and they turned out not too bad.

Haven't used it myself. But it is out there and specially designed for this use case. Can call C libraries directly too.

That's a nice aspect of systems like Ansible, they basically force good practices like this.

For vector design, I use Inkscape. I've designed some logos for people with it and it works really well. I've only used Scribus a couple of times but it seemed fine when I used it.
