Cisco SAN Formats Itself to Windows

The best line: There is little more terrifying than watching a 300K storage device launch a windows PXE installer.

It just blow my mind that people would trust Cisco with storage (or servers.) But a $300K storage device? Ouch. And one that installs anything it sees on the network by default? What is driving people to even talk to a networking company to be their SAN vendor?

The FreeNAS community really shows just how important it is to avoid products like FreeNAS. It's built on good tech, but the issues are that the community is horrible, only tiny non-storage expert shops use it and it is broadly misunderstood. FreeNAS doesn't make any of the technology, they just repackage it. So the vendor and their community all lack the basic knowledge of what they have and the stuff that they repeat just gets worse and worse.

If this was the FreeBSD community, talking about the same technologies, the answers and approaches would be completely different. Enterprises use FreeBSD every day. They do not use FreeNAS. Once you limit yourself to a "non-expert" product, the idea of using a community for assistance causes a breakdown in dangerous ways.

@scottalanmiller its to clean up the mac junk files on a windows computer. If you copy any folders from a mac to PC or even a zip folder you will have them in it (they are hidden though, but take up space and mess with some programs).

Gotcha, now I see what you are doing here 🙂

Yeah, same. See, it wasn't just me for once.

They often have good posts about drive reliability although they use consumer drives which are very different from the enterprise drives that most storage vendors ship.

On a side note, I worked at HP during the Thailand flooding and can tell you that the hard drive issues were real.  HD prices were increasing and we could not get the quantities we needed.  I saw shortages that impacted our ship first hand.

Given all these challenges it is no surprise that failure rates would go up for consumer drives.  The HD companies were struggling to fill orders and they were trying to do everything they could to increase volumes. It is likely that these pressures could lead to more aggressive testing and a potential decrease in quality. Consumer drives would likely be the ones that were most directly impacted since they are typically the lowest quality.

This one was an easy fix, but that the issue exists at all is a fragility unique to FreeNAS that does not exist if you only use FreeBSD:

On HyperV, the use of SMB3 is pretty nascent and very vendors provide a good platform for it. So there tends to be a trend to remain with iSCSI for HyperV because of this. Not because SMB3 isn't the better option at a protocol level but because it is so new it remains mostly impractical.
