I have no idea if it is a true etiquette thing or not, but I have always felt that one should always greet a person in their local time of day if possible.
May come from years of speaking across a 14-15 hour timezone difference.

working hard and trying to find out what's going on in Manchester city centre this morning... 6 unmarked police cars with sirens and lights whizzed past me on the way in this morning...very unusual!

I managed to get into a marching protest in Prishtina yesterday morning and ended up surrounded by police in riot gear last night.

Nope, neither was intentional. I was looking for a restaurant in the Prishtina square when they marched through.
In Skopje we were walking to the new Macedonia Square where the Art Bridge is and the riot police were heading over the bridge with us. They had parked their paddy wagon or whatever at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and were headed south. Their other transport vehicle came up by the river and we had to wait for it, too.

Traffic in front of our hotel has just stopped. Cops with assault rifles out blocking traffic. People honking at them anyway.

I'm concerned about using a Google Car given what Google GPS does. Routinely it takes us on things that aren't roads, into dangerous situations and on roads that take twice as long as the normal route you'd just pick by looking at a map.

I think the issue that @scottalanmiller has is that he's using it in parts of the world not as well documented as streets in America / UK

I've never had Google send me down something that isn't a road... but it has definitely gotten lost in the town square, lol.
We had it turn us onto roads that were replaced with buildings decades ago just yesterday. Wrong ways on one ways. Down a road that was in such bad repair that it tore the front bumper off of the car earlier this week. It will avoid major highways that are perfectly good and fast and send you down back streets in cities so narrow that the car almost can't make it down.
It's totally ridiculous.
I've been in places where it sent me to bridges that were so long gone that no one could remember them and the area had turned into a shanty town and it was totally unsafe to be there and Google said it was the main route into the city!
