Told a Buffalo LinkStation Duo to reset itself a few hours ago. That apparently also wipes the drives in some fashion. When I started, we had 1300 minutes (22 hours) to go.

I used to have a Terastation at home.. Yep reset doesn't just clear the config it wipes the drives I believe it does the 3 pass DOD short wipe, but I couldn't confirm.

I mean, why lenovo with their antics as of the past year.

I would never consider a Lenovo product again because of they way they've acted.

And Dell, HP, ASUS and others have had their fair share too.. Don't use the OEM image and your fine.

The one issue they had would still load their drivers even if you image. It was loaded from the BIOS. However, I still have one I use as a Linux workstation.

It wasn't loaded via the BIOS, sure if you used the drivers from Lenovo for your image you still get it but not if go direct to Intel nvidia etc. plus Windows 8/10 does pretty good at downloading straight from the vendors on its own. If you're referring to LSE that wasn't any maililcous code, just auto installers and it can be disabled/removed

It used WPBT to load the drivers from the BIOS.

I don't know what that says but it did not load drivers it loaded some software and it can easily be disabled.. Most sources on these things over play them for click bait..

Everyone forgets the roll Microsoft played as well. There's a reason they are now dropping secure boot (because that's what allows WBPT)

                      llows WBPT)

I agree 100% that WBPT is terrible.

                      Here's a quote from Ars http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?p=29497693&sid=ddf3e32512932172454de515091db014#p29497693

Before booting windows 7 or 8, the bios checks if C:\Windows\system32\autochk.exe is the Lenovo one or the original Microsoft one. If it is not the lenovo one, it moves it to C:\Windows\system32\0409\zz_sec\autobin.exe, and then writes it's own autochk.exe. During boot, the Lenovo autochk.exe writes a LenovoUpdate.exe and a LenovoCheck.exe file to the system32 directory, and sets up a services to run one of them when an internet connection is established.

I was thinking I read at one point that it added a network driver for some reason, but maybe I'm mistaken (not superfish but different).

The only way to get rid of it at the time was by manually flashing the BIOS.

They've since put out an update that fixed it.

I still need to beat the first one. I like it but it scares my kids so they rarely let me play it.

So anyone who purchased a Remix Mini, if you do the recent update it will remove all google apps and the Play Store. If you want the Play Store back, you have to side load it and then reinstall all of your apps. If you skip this update, you won't get any more updates.

Trying to debate whether I want to update or not.

I did my tablet and was quite shocked when that happened. The update has been worth it though. My tablet has been awesome on it.
