I don't work for free for people I don't know personally. And those that I do work for free, really we have more a symbiotic relationship. I do work for them, then do work for me, like car repairs, etc.

Yeah most of the people I help are either very close friends or bartering. Like actual, have to get my hands dirty help, not just "hey you should be using CrasphPlan".

This is one of those situations where my empathy for others clouds my judgment. Most of the time it's a strength, just not in this situation.

feeling like I'm gouging keeps my one off fees low to home users. Businesses, I charge $100/hr, home users, somewhere between $35-50 typically.

I'm reaching a point where my free time is worth more to me than $50 an hour but I don't think my services are so unbelievable that I would feel comfortable charging more. I may just stop doing it altogether.

Well that's what you have to decide. While I know Scott can easily earn way more than $50/hr, that's been a rare thing in my life. Home support is not something I advertise or seek out either. The less than 20 hours a year I do it, in general I don't mind.

I don't seek it out either but Geek Squad and others like it are essentially highway robbery. I can't save everyone though

Are the they though? What's their bench rate? $90/hr? How much does a plumber charge? or an electrician?

Exactly. Why in the hell are you not at least the same as the repoair service for whatever other thing you need. Mechanic, Plumber, Electrician, whatever. There is no reason to give away your time.

      I agree with you

In your situation, where you're helping a friend, and you know it's going to be more than 2 hours... a flat $150 might be good.

We also have to consider the machine itself. I keep telling most people to buy Chromeboxes. The vast majority of users are only web browsing and it provides google drive as well as libre office if you absolutely require it. $150 you can just buy a new one. It's fantastic.

I keep hearing that, but damn... I can't stand using one for more than 5 mins. Those cheap ones are slow. I suppose I could tolerate a faster one, but I'd still miss the apps I couldn't install like Telegram

Really? Might be a fluke. I was using one with a Celeron and it was very fast. They have i3 and i5 versions as well I believe. Didn't research the higher end versions though. I don't know why you would need them on a Chromebox tbh. You can only do so much on them. It's basically just a browser

@wirestyle22 I was setting one up for a physician to use at home. For what he needed, and granted what most home users need - a chromebook IS all they need.

Nearly anyone on these forums isn't a normal home user though, and I'm guessing most of us what more abilities.

Yeah of course. I only recommend them for home users that essentially only need basic functionality w/ Google Docs + Browsing. If you do anything else it wouldn't be my recommendation. Luckily that is most users here 😄

Mine's a dual core Celeron. It runs Chrome OS and Linux simultaneously and doesn't slow down. They also have a Telegram chrome app.

I remember thinking this was a good way to push home users about 4 years ago too - but back then things like Tax software still required a local Windows/Mac install, and weren't browser based like they are now.

We're getting there. At some point in the future anyone will be able to rent access to do graphics editing, etc from within a browser - it will be good for the casual user... though i think the hobbiest and better would demand more.

I could pretty much live on nothing but a Chromebook. I do almost nothing that requires more.

When we got hit by Hurricane Sandy I lost power for 14 days. I didn't understand the depths of my internet addiction until that happened. Pic relevant. It's me.

We found out that today was a planned outage to do repairs as it was not raining because it has been raining here for two weeks and apparently there was storm damage to be addressed.

We are packing up as we are taking an overnight train journey tomorrow. Driving up to Beclean, Transylvania after work tomorrow. Then hopping on an overnight train to Iosi, Moldavia which sits on the Romanian/Moldova frontier. Then switching to the Moldova train to cross the border in the morning and heading into Moldova for a ~2 hour trip Chisinau, the capital.

I use a wide screen monitor, most websites still don't take great advantage of that. See all the wasted space on ML?

and that's wasted space after having Tree Style Tabs.

Also Tree Style allows me to see much more the names of the tabs than I can if they are across the top.

WTH? 😛 I'm not complaining, Just explaining why I love tree style tabs... if the page took full advantage I might be forced back to top tabs 😞

LOL - neither do I, but I'd say my browser is probably at 80-90%. like you, I rarely run any application at full screen on my desktop.

Attempting to find the perfect gift for my fiance who's birthday is this coming Monday 🙂

I've exhausted so many options on past events it's going to be hard!
