From the bit I've used it this is really the extent of it. There is some additional nuances but if you get these commands down LVM is much easier.

                      Ok I get

pvcreate: Command not permitted while global/metadata_read_only is set.

I'm on XenServer 7.. I think I need to use a xe vdi-create command to create the volume first.. then I can mount that as LVM through another xe command.

After you figure out partitioning, then LVM. One step at a time.

Partition first. And pvcreate requires you to specify the block device.

diskimage-fu, probably worth a black belt:

                                Part 1 (in a amd64 VM):

                                1. Download blank Raspbian image
                                2. Create a blank loop file
                                3. Mount both, original image and new image
                                4. Create a slightly modified similar partition layout, format partitions
                                5. Rsync everything to the new image
                                6. Create NFS export from the mounted target
                                7. Flash a modified version of the image (just the boot partition including the kernel and a few firmware drivers) to a SD card. Slightly modify the kernel command line to actually mount the root partition ("/") via NFS

Part 2 (on ARM based device)
                                8. Fire up your ARM based device with the SD card
                                9. Modify image (update packages, install software, purge stuff, modify configs)
                                10. Shutdown

                                Part 3 (within the VM)
                                11. Flush file buffers, un-export, unmount, un-loop & stop NFS server
                                12. Flash final image to SD card

                                Completely scripted.

My previous plan (using a chroot on an ARM based CPU) worked too, but it was very slow due to the old Banana Pro I had spare. The new version is even cooler because I can run the real environment (incl. the desktop) on real hardware without flashing a full distro to an SD card.
