Determining storage usage since the beginning of time for our NAS (2010) to get an idea of possible storage requirements in the future.
We had no previous history with our storage requirements. We basically took what we had now and added 15% to it, year-after-year. This is not a hard & fast rule and you need to figure out how much growth you should plan to expect.
We went a little aggressive and said 15%, while another company might grow 10%. A more conservative and cautious company might grow 5% instead. Depends on what your business growth is subject to and you need to plan in accordance to that.

Wow, that is quite a bit of growth. We went 5-years out, looked to see what we would expect and grow into and purchased that. Right now we're at 3-4 TB. 4 TB at 15% growth year after year for 5 years is going to turn into a little over 8 TB. Therefore, we bought 10 TB of storage space.
