@dashrender By kid free, I mean out of High School, not bound by our divorce agreements anymore. If they want to live with us that is fine but that might mean moving with us.

Lived with my parents until I went off to college at 17, didn't live with them again after that.

Same here. However I have made it clear to all 4 of my kids, especially my daughters, that I hope they stay until they are 30. lol

I remember reading somewhere about a tribe in Africa, or perhaps common across countries on that continent, boys saved into their late 20's so they could buy a farm and have financially stability to offer a women.

While that isnt very feminist, I would rather see my kids going to college, jumpstarting their career and saving money so they can start life ahead of the bank/credit game.

If I could take my current wage, and live in Mississippi, I'd be golden!

But, I would never want to live there.... so yeah.

My wife and I in 6 years will be kid free. So we are really looking at what we want to do and where we to live after kids as we will have a lot more options and it will be easier to do. We ruled out all places that have a much too high of living cost. We are looking at Tennessee. I am even thinking about getting out of IT and going into brewing. Hard Ciders and fruits.

I'm not sure what you are basing your 6 years on, but kids living at home will into their mid 20s is very common today, if not even longer. I hope for your sake this isn't the case.

Only in the U.S. is it considered a problem if your kids are living with you after highschool. Everywhere else, it's standard.

I was with my folks until I was 24, lol. I don't see a problem with it. Most families don't have the family dynamics to make it work well. I am one of the lucky ones.

Same here. Some people looked at me funny but I was able to save a good bit of money before I got married doing this. A lot of the issue you see these days with kids living with parents into their 20s (and 30s) is that they aren't working towards anything meaningful if working at all. They're just bumming. I was planning to continue saving up until 27ish to buy my first home in cash (I live in Mississippi so housing isn't that expensive). Ended up getting married instead and used that money as down payment on a home plus some remodeling.

@Tim_G Mississippi isn't so bad if you're in the right place. I've been to other states that seemed MUCH more backwoods than where I'm from.

I moved out 12 days after high school.

When I was older, like 19, I returned for a couple months while moving from Michigan to NY and hadn't found an apartment yet. But that was the only time that I returned.

I went back and forth with to my Dad's place during my community college years, until I got married. Then I moved out and never returned.

It wouldn't be anything glamorous, but a decent fixer-upper around here I could get for $80k - $110k. Living at home with minimal expenses, it was easy to save $15-20k annually even with a beginner salary.

You can get some decent $80-$100k homes in San Diego too... but the catch... the property they sit on is $800k. Ridiculous.

80-100k in Seattle gets you a few square feet of house or land.

@momurda my house in Italy was something line 400k in 2010, we already were in the descending curve of the market bubble but not at the bottom.

I was close to the same, the winter after I graduated HS, I was not so kindly asked to leave.. and I have been financially OK enough to never need to live with my parents or anyone else since. I consider it one of my personal accomplishments.

Today is just going to be a bad day all around for him. He may want to go ahead and begin working on his resume as this is a resume-generating event.

At least he has good backups. He should stop everything he is doing right now and restore his DCs from backup. That would be the fastest way to resolve this issue.
