I've never had this problem... even without private registration.

I ALWAYS make my info private. Even if it costs extra.
But what I have gotten lucky with these last few years and domains, is a coupon code that gives it for free plus a discount on the actual domain name.
When renewal time comes, it's not free, but at least when you register it for whatever time period it is.

I get domains 2 years at a time with free private registration, usually for under $5 total. I don't see an advantage of using Google Domains when I just forward DNS to my webhost anyways.

$5 domain registration is crazy.
Right now there's a promo code for 1 year (not 2). For the two year you'll have to get lucky when you need it, or wait.

If you can't catch another renewal promo code, it has a possibility of being more than Google Domains with the private registration... I renewed a domain for 2 years once and had to pay like $25 because there wasn't any and I was kindof lazy. But usually you can make out well.

I was under the impression that GD code were only good for new domains.

It depends on the code. Sometimes they have renewal deals, but more often they are for new registrations.
It's a toss-up. If Google Domains (or somewhere else) is cheaper in that moment and you can't find a 2-year promo, then I'd not use Godaddy.
