@travisdh1 Seattle is not cheap but it is quite a nice city. Depending on where you work look at some of the suburbs - they are super nice.

Most important thing is that it is not NJ.

I only visited NJ and I felt dirty.

Interviewer: How much compensation are you looking for?
Travis: To move to Seattle? Let me discuss this life altering decision with my wife. Oh, and we are going to uproot the kids too tsk tsk (even if you don't have kids).

            😄

That's great until the xmas party rolls around and everyone expects to see your family. Then, you're stuck hiring a fake one from craigslist and you didn't know your wife was an alcoholic... next thing you know, you're naked in a bathtub with your kidney missing.

Might want to do a salary calculations to see where you would rank in that market. Since you seem to already have a couple of years experience, then I doubt you would be entry-level Linux/Unix Sys Admin, that should give you some kudos.

The only problem you're looking at is the expense of relocation.

Which most companies will reimburse if you're moving across the country

True, most of the more enterprise companies would. SMB's probably not so much, or only limited.

Oh, this would be well outside the SMB space, this company is in the Fortune 500.

Then relocation expenses should not be a problem at all.

Yeah, even the suburbs aren't cheap. Don't even think about downtown, $3k-$4k a month for a downtown apartment.

Branch IT support for a Fortune 500 company in Columbus, OH. Lots of opportunity for promotion from within the company. Also, the same company my brother-in-law works for, so it was easy to get my name in front of the proper people instead of having to get past HR first.

Contacts are really the big secret of IT jobs. Seems like most everyone gets their jobs this way, often even newbies.
