We often say that fax is really insecure, but why? What makes fax so much less secure than common alternatives like email or instant messaging, or even traditional phones?

The next time somebody asks me, "but yeah, isn't fax more secure?" I'll do a face palm per usual, and then send them here so I don't have to explain ..again.
