      Situation:
Initial date of creation was March 2009.
      3 hosts running Win Server 2008 w Hyper-V.

      1x Dell 2950:
      Ram: 16gb
      VMs: 5 - **Server 2008 x4, Win XP x1

      • *includes one Domain Controller

      1x Dell 2950:
      Ram: 16gb
      VMs: 4 - Server 2008 x2, Server 2003 x1, Win XP x1

      1x Dell 2900:**
      Ram: 16gb
      VMs: 3 - Server 2008 x2, Server 2003 x1
** This server is failing hard drives at an alarming rate

      Proposed software solution:

      1. Buy Server 2016 Standard license - use for new DC vm.
      2. Upgrade Directory Services level from 2008 to 2016.
      3. Buy backup software (see #3 below)

      Proposed hardware solution:

      1. Buy 2 new servers.
      2. Choose hypervisor: 2016 Hyper-V or Fedora KVM
      3. Choose backup solution

Thoughts, feedback, ideas...all suggestions are welcome?

Are you saying the three hosts have Server 2008 on the bare metal with the Hyper-V role enabled? If so, then st the very least, your solution should have just the hypervisor (whether it’s KVM or Hyper-V) on the bare metal.

Ok. Next, do you have SA for your server licenses? Or perhaps the better question, what services are each of your VMs offering? Is there still a need for you to be hosting those VMs? For example, if you’re hosting Exchange, why not consider Exchange Online?

SA! Are you kidding, these are Server 2008 vm's.
These vm's are LoB vm's, printserver etc. Nothing like Exchange that can be hosted.

Why replace with 2 servers? I'm guessing you could easily get this entire load on a single server.

Why only upgrade the DC? If the DC is the only thing you're going to upgrade, you might consider saving that money and installing linux with SMB instead.

Nope, I’m not kidding. There are places that keep SA current for the purpose of one day upgrading their OSes (and subsequently never do because of [insert nonsense here] )—not that that’s the best use of SA. Since I know nothing about your situation, I ask these questions.

Correct. The second server will be a backup server.

The lob apps are Windows only & require AD.
Also $$ reasons, more upgrades will require more $$ & I'm not the one writing the check.
The available budget can only go so far.

The one writing the check needs to understand how much of this stuff is beyond end of life and invest in more than just upgrading the DC.

Why not just a single modern server? Something like a Dell R730xd would do it all so easily. They really aren't much more than another modern server. The expensive part depends on the hard drive / ssd setup. Still cheaper than two servers.

Edit: Depending on budget, a R630 may be better. Mostly due to smaller extra costs adding up. The R730 warranty is a little more, for example. But some Rx30 would be good.

Sounds like the one writing the checks needs to have it pointed out that if they can't afford to keep current, they can't afford the platform or the software that uses it.

huh, that's a lot of money. Is it warranted? I like the idea, but it's not about likes, it's about business cases. For example, do you have redundancies in your current VMs?

Nope, that's the reason why I'm getting just a single Server 2016 Std lic for the DC upgrade. The rest of the vm's stay at their current o/s.

It looks like the software costs for Windows Server(s) and CALs will probably be more than the hardware.

Nope, that's the reason why I'm getting just a single Server 2016 Std lic for the DC upgrade. The rest of the vm's stay at their current o/s.

How many CALs are you going to need, roughly?
