Are the tapes meant for long term archiving or just to take a copy offsite?

      It's good for both!

In most cases like this, faster tape is really just the best answer.

I got an LTO6 averaging over 14 GB per minute which isn't bad.

What kind of disk back ending that throughput?

Some NAS models like Synology and Qnap have a copy button feature on the front for syncing data to a usb drive. Maybe they could use Veeam Endpoint for the initial backup to the NAS and then the copy button for a second copy to take offsite on the usb drive

Actually, one of my colleagues mentioned that today. We are looking at implementing a Qnap, but are unsure how well it would copy over the security permissions from the servers to the Qnap.

It’s not part of the equation. The backup system records the files. The type of storage you use doesn’t interact with the backup and corrupt it.

Think about backups as unlike copying files to live storage. The details for restoring is inside the files, not meta data stored on the NAS

I think the concern was the copy button from the NAS that would create a second copy of the data from the NAS to the usb HDD. And the ability to restore data from the offsite usb HDD, if needed.

Yes, it would make a copy there. But if you restored that copy, it would then be a restorable copy that it restored, if that makes sense. Each backup process retains all of the permissions of the thing that it backed up (a requirement for something to realistically claim to be a backup product.) So while it is a second copy, it can't modify the thing that it is backing up, or it wouldn't really be a back. The permissions you want to preserve are part of the data inside the backup.

Veeam does have tape library integration, but I am not sure how it works with the agent side of things. I am assuming nothing is virtualized in this scenario. It also has integration with Starwind and Amazon S3/Glacier VTL.

Agents work the same as long as you are using the paid console based version.

I have a mix of both VMs and physical (not for much longer). The agents didn't fully integrate with the console until 9.5 U3, which was released last month-ish.
