something else if you like rh/centos

don't really have a preference... i'm getting more familiar with DNF and APT-GET.. so.. okay with either

that's plenty of power to use a normal distro. Don't get weird, the era of special small Linux for ancient hardware is gone. Old hardware today is powerful enough to run normal distros.

            Fedora MATE should work great.

@scottalanmiller 2GB is not enough for Fedora workstation, or ubuntu desktop. Unless you like waiting a lot. I have tried it.

Enough with a lighter desktop. Should work just fine.

Deeping might but I am not sure what kind of CPU, Puppy linux is small like 50MB or so and low usage of RAM but it can take a toll on RAM with KDE the last time I used it.

Korora and Deepin are out - they caused issues with some of the external hardware I need to be able to work with.

Something like Ubuntu+XFCE should do the trick.

That's what I was thinking. XFCE works really well for me.

Any distro with a light desktop. Linux per se is not really memory hungry. Try lxqt/lxde.
