I have an entire department that have no audio on their Windows 8.1 U1 machines in IE 11.

The users do not have local admin rights.

When I log in as a user with local admin rights, the audio in Youtube works just fine.

      Additional info:

sounds do work in other applications, etc

These machines were deployed from the same image of Windows 8.1. U1 was installed via WSUS.

The machines have the latest updates from MS via WSUS

When looking at a video on Youtube, when logged in as a non local admin, the sound icon is missing from the control bar in Youtube, but is there when you run IE as a local admin (see picture)

Yeah, someone in SW pointed me toward a MS support thread. In there they suggested checking Internet Options > Advanced Tab > Play Sounds in webpages. This check box was unchecked.

I found that my GP had removed the check, so no one has had audio in IE for close to a month (I'm surprised it took this long for someone to say something).

In researching what/why this happened it seems that the IE Preferences are all supposed to be set to 'ignore' (red circle) by default, but when I create a brand new GPO to test it, all of the settings where set to enabled (green), so I'm not sure what happened there. You have to use 'F' keys to enable/disable each setting in the IE Preferences options.

I've checked the box in my GPO and verified that it's deploying and users now have sound.

The reason my Admin user didn't have this issue is because they don't get the user GP applied to them. So I was completely mistaken that admin vs non-admin had anything to do with it.
