Ring Time For Find Me Follow Me W/ Call Confirmation

Just curious how long do you set your ring times when you have find me/follow me forward to a cell phone with the confirmation setting enabled? I feel like I need to set it for 45 seconds to give the person receiving the call enough time to answer the call, listen to the instructions, then press 1 to answer the call. However, for the caller this is obviously a long time and will most likely hang up if the call takes that long to get to voicemail. If I shorten to the ring time the call gets disconnected some times before the receiver of the call can answer it.

I've run into this before. There is no good answer. You just kind of have to tweak it on a case by case basis. Forty five seconds feels way too long. Who would hang out for that long? They'd just hang up thinking that your phone was broken.

One option is to have an Announcement:
Please wait while we try to connect your call, etc.
Also, you can change the hold music after the Announcement so it's more clear that your trying to connect them.
(IE: Hold Music vs. Ringing)

Those are good if you don't want the caller to hear the ring, but does not help with the question.

Actually I think it does. If the caller just hears ringing, they assume that only one phone is ringing and will likely hang up in under 45 seconds. If you hear music and a message to please hold while trying to find your party, the caller has been put on notice that the system is 'trying to find your party' ... i.e. it might take longer than normal for the 'system' to find who they are calling.

You have to think about all of the pieces.
- What is the caller's expectation
- What is the callee's expectation
- How long is the callee's cell phone ring time prior to voicemail.
- How long is the timeout while the PBX waits for the callee to confirm
First a standard "ring cycle" in the US is ~4 seconds, 2 seconds ring and 2 seconds silence.
This is what callers are used to hearing, so calculate your initial numbers based on that.Looking at my setup below. You can see I ring my extension for 10 seconds. I originally had it at 8 seconds, but got annoyed that many calls were kicking to follow me before I could answer. bringing it up to 10 was perfect for me.
After 10 seconds, it rings both my desk and my mobile. The follow-me ring time is 26 seconds because that is a few seconds shorter than my cell phone voicemail pickup time of 30 seconds. I never want a call going to me cell phone voicemail.
Because I never want it going to cell phone voicemail, I also know that I can not "reject" a call on my mobile. Because that would send it immediately to the cell phone voicemail and I do not want that.
I could get around that by enabling the confirmation as you have done, but I am very often totally handsfree and not able to reach my phone easily to press 1. This caused me to miss forwarded calls that I did want to answer, so I disabled the setting.
So the maximum ring time is 36 (10 + 26) seconds. Divide that by 4 and you get 9 ring cycles.
Here is mine. It is always turned on.

This seems to work somewhat well. Both phones ring at the same time, so you don't have to wait for it to ring, then go to FMFM, etc.
You can still confirm calls, and it doesn't make you confirm the call from your extension. Voicemails still end up on the PBX.
If you get a lot of calls, it can be annoying to get that many call on your mobile phone, but it works in some cases.

What is the purpose of that? Follow me IS a ring group. Set the initial ring time to 0 and you are done. Exactly as you jsut did. but now at least the person's extension is found in the extension listing with everyone else.

Turning on confirmation is what makes this happen with no issues.

@JaredBusch - Yeah the only reason for the confirm setting was to avoid any calls going to the callee's cell phone voicemail. I would prefer to eliminate it but what if the person's cell phone is off. Then it is always going straight to their cell voicemail which I want to avoid.
@aaronstuder - I think the combination of the confirm call and the announcement "please wait while we connect you" is the way to go.
