I am setting up a small WP site for our marketing team to manage. I want to give them certain permissions to edit theme and plugin info, which are part of the WP admin role, but not allow them to do most of the admin things, like create/modify users, install plugins or updates, etc. I see that there a few plugins that offer customized and extended/more granular roles to be created.

Is anyone using something like this?
      https://wordpress.org/plugins/user-role-editor/

If so, what are you using and do you like it?

Are they doing CSS editing or something?

They may. I am not 100% sure yet.

You need to know exactly what they are doing first to give proper least permissions. Sounds like the may only need read access to the /wp-content/themes

Right. That is why I am trying to get more granular with the permissions. I don't want to give them full admin, but I am almost certain that whatever they are going to be doing, it will require more than just the editor role.

I can think of a single scenario where a marketing team would need to edit a theme or plugin... Can you?

Editor should give them to rights to use a plugin that is already installed. They shouldnt need to modify or code the plugin in any way.

I'll start there and see what they come up with. I just wanted to know what my options are, if they "need" to do something else.

Isolate it, give him admin, and let them crash and burn. Just make sure to CYA.

Hi <Random Person> this is beyond my capabilities, you have to talk to the super admin to see if they'll allow this.

What fun is that. . . we have elevated users here and they just constantly install plugins as shortcuts to doing their job and then ask us to fix it.

It doesn't fix the problem and just causes more problems for us down the road.

You ask whoever is admin to fix it then. They asked to be admin, they must be Wordpress experts, no?

@DustinB3403 I used that approach with some users in the past, nobody asks me for admin privileges to any systems anymore.

I highly doubt anyone here is a wordpress expert. I was told by one of the marketing ladies that she used to own a web design firm for 20 years. She also said that she didn't want to use wordpress for something else because it was open source so there was no accountability and there were too many hands in the cookie jar. So, I wrote her off on knowing anything of real value when it comes to this stuff.

You should say: Yes there are major concerns of security and accountability with giving multiple people admin access. While the Editor role can not change the theme, add users or install plugins these restrictions are the same for the workstation you have. You can't install software, change the theme, add fonts etc. but are able to operate from your day to day.

If you require administrative access for this wordpress site, the IT department will not be able to assist you with it from the moment you have administrative rights as we will essentially be co-administrators with you which could cause severe conflicts between buggy addons, themes etc.

That's what we try here but with the "if you have admin access, we aren't touching it any more".
It takes it from an IT system to a different class with where we work.

I am the only IT guy here. I don't have time to teach people lessons after they screw up something that should have been restricted in the first place.

Do you have time to keep explaining why admin access is a bad idea?

No, but I can copy and paste a response 🙂 I can't clone myself yet.
