What did one AD client say to the other AD client at the single's bar?

Hey baby, look me up sometime.

Which one do you guys use most?

Domain Services is what everyone means when they talk about AD. Most businesses never even install the others, a lot don't even know that the others exist or what they do.

It's the first one. You are creating the domain.

Add a new Forest. Domains are inside a forest. By creating the new forest, you also create a new domain.

he's not up to that point yet, he has to select "new" rather than "existing" first.

He's not familiar with Forests and Domains as groupings, so wasn't understanding what it was showing.

They did. They recommend that you buy a domain now.

                                    What is Active Directory?

AD is a central "white pages" like service where computers and applications on the network can literally "look up" information about computers or users. Like they can look up a users full name, their extension number, or their email address. Very basic in concept, but obviously super useful.

That's how I've always thought of it.

Of course it’s OK... though as you since test not needed, but still I would use a real domain name, not a .local domain so you don’t ever try doing that in prod.

Like @Dashrender said, it's ok. But I would choose another name for multiple reasons, even in a testing scenario

                                        • .local isn't a valid TLD (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.local for example)
                                        • Register a real domain, like @scottalanmiller mentioned
                                          • avoid company names - may change in the future
                                          • avoid product names - may change in the future
                                          • helps avoiding clashing names (important if you want to build a trust between domains in the future, for example)
                                          • gives your users a "single domain experience" for internal and external services.
                                        • I prefer to have an additional level of abstraction for internal and external services. Therefore, I name my domains like ad.dom.tld. Personal preference.

wrcombs.com is available. Go register it for a year at godaddy (or whoever) for $12.

Then, like @thwr pointed out in his list, use something like ad.wrcombs.com as your AD domain.

Do that, or something like it. Small price to pay for the joy of owning your own domain for all of your projects.
