So has anyone successfully blocked access to Zoom meetings? The hits keep coming. I copied and sent out the article to our partners and got back a "Hey, we are using this" response.... 😕

That pretty much sums it up. They are making the decision, not your problem, move on. Silly as it is.

But seriously, you cannot block access to Zoom meeting if the 3rd party that is hosting a meeting is using it and you want to be on the meeting, you have to use it.

You can have an internal policy to not use zoom to host meetings. but that is all..

But anyone dumping on zoom because of the latest news cycle is stupid. You don't do thigns based on news cycle.

Also, the critical things have been addressed already.

I was just told to find an alternative to Zoom. I asked why and they named all the issues that were there. I said they have all been addressed by zoom and then asked, how am I supposed to find another solution after the professors have been using Zoom for 3 weeks now. Not to mention get them trained on it while still using zoom until they're comfortable.

                We'll be staying with Zoom.

Well, the main reason not to use Zoom can't be fixed short of firing all the top brass and the board, as Scott mentioned - that issue being that they decided to sell all the user data to FB.

Since Zoom has a free version, you're not likely able to completely prevent them from using it either.

Aren't they still running their own encryption though? Or did they fix that now?

I just saw that an org found a bunch of gaps in their homegrown encryption.

that professors need training on how to use basic tools like this... it's unthinkable.

I don't see them as having been addressed. They have been addresses symptoms, not the problems.

It's really not. When profs are not technology inclined because they usually are lecture style teachers then you have a bit of a learning curve. Most of us can grasp things fairly quickly because we've basically been doing this most of our lives. 1/3 of the profs here are in their early 60's so technology isn't as easy for them. Making the changes in a zoom account to require a password, change settings, etc isn't as easy for them.

These are not the people we need teaching our children if they cannot figure out how to operate a zoom call. How can we expect them to teach our kids anything of value if they cannot do simple tech tasks? School is supposed to prepare kids for the real world (which last time I checked, has a ton of technology).

Sure if this were not a specialty school then I could see how technology is essential to the teaching. I work at a graduate school where about 1/3 of the schooling isn't technology based.

Sure if this were not a specialty school then I could see how technology is essential to the teaching. I work at a graduate school where about 1/3 of the schooling isn't technology based.

Then stop saying it's ok that teachers are so incompetent that they can't use basic tech.

Not to mention get them trained on it while still using zoom until they're comfortable.

that professors need training on how to use basic tools like this... it's unthinkable.

OK. So let me clear it up. The ones that use lecture based teaching don't use tech other than email. They barely use PowerPoint. I have now spent about 4 days teaching those profs to use Zoom for which we have a EDU account. So from a global standpoint I can make all the changes that Zoom as recommended and made for the free versions.

What I would prefer not to do is confuse the shit out of them and find another product that isn't as simple as Zoom is to have them only have more issues with that, struggle to get things figured out, or get pissed off and just give up. That benefits no one.

We have Microsoft Teams and on previous conversations on here there have been plenty of Why the F is Teams such a pain in the ass for this or that. So I am not going to throw Zoom in the trash because 4 out of 18 professors have more difficulty with certain tech than others.

                                          Is that a better response?

When profs are not technology inclined because they usually are lecture style teachers then you have a bit of a learning curve.

We are discussing basic literacy here, not "tech". Imagine when we were kids having your teachers struggle with how to use a pen or a calculator! This is the equivalent today.

Nothing to do with tech or their lecture styles, has to do with being functional adults in society. When is someone who is functionally borderline literate a good candidate to be teaching others? If all they are doing is teaching things that they've memorized, then they are the worst possible teachers, anti-teachers, really. If they are people who are teaching properly, teaching how to think, how can they do that while lacking basic literacy?
