It’s been a bit since I last looked at the product offerings from UBNT. I will say, thy have expanded quite a bit over the last eighteen months...

WiFi, Wired, PoE and cameras. Now we have phone systems and access control.

From a quick scan of both, they look well done, but - Has UBNT gone to far? Is it a good plan to invest so heavily in a UBNT with access control, phone as well as the network infrastructure? How reliable is the phone system, can I used FreePBX or am I limited to their system?

What about the Access Control? There are a number of other systems that have been around a while and thus have Ben vetted and have history and acceptability in a number of different tries of companies, private, public, and government.

Admittedly, these comes from a cursory scan of the technology, and the recent discuss about their data breach.

Their access control is actually pretty good and reasonably priced for residential use. It's compatible with most electric locks. The only thing stopping us from using it at my company is the lack of reporting options. It's very bare bones and robust reporting has been a requirement of any enterprise companies I've worked for.

Can't speak on their phones as I haven't setup voip yet. You can use FreePBX but you lose out on features their system provides you. I'm planning on getting a UBNT voip phone and hooking it into their system to see what its like. I can post about it if you're interested.

@gjacobse The access control is only good if you already have the controller for it, I forget off the top of my head which device it is, but it is only a single device that can act as the controller. Basically, if you need to buy the controller, then the price of a system is not worth it for access control.

The UniFi Access system consists of four elements:

UA Controller: The control center for your Access system, hosted on the UniFi Dream Machine Pro (UDM-Pro). Your UA controller is easily upgradable and offers a host of features that simplify access policymaking as well as personnel, space, and device management.

UA-Hub: A secure I/O hub that authenticates inputs registered by your Access readers (UA-Pro & UA-Lite), push buttons, and sensors. Your UA Hub can also control door locks, alarms, and motorized door openers.

UA-Pro and UA-Lite: The Access system's card or motion reading devices that unlock doors with a swipe of an NFC card or NFC-enabled mobile phone. Please refer to the Current and Future Access Modes section below for more information on current and future access methods.

UA-Card: A NFC card that is specific to your Access system and encrypted with a special algorithm that cannot be replicated, unlike other NFC cards. Your Access system will support any NFC card, so you can retain your current access cards.

It was the Dream Machine Pro I was thinking of. The reviews I've seen all say that if you have to buy a Dream Machine Pro just for the access control that you're better off going with the competition who's overall price will be lower.

And that right there would bother me I believe. One system.... one possible point of failure.

Single points of failure are something to consider when thinking through risk and such, but just having them present isn't necessarily a terrible thing.

Controller is free, though. So it's a weird company where having the controller built into your router makes sense. It's really playing on the extreme niche and/or consumer business - basically a company that acts like someone's home. But not my home, a lower end home.

That applies if you aren't planning on using the other stuff the Dream Machine is capable of. It's a single device that can manage all of your AP's, Security Cameras, Door Access and soon VoIP. Depending on the use I would think it would be worth it provided you are getting the functionality you want out of it.

That's sounding like a great product for the home, I'll have to keep my eye on them.

It's really not. Think of your home like a business. This is a product for a business that has confused itself with a home.

Wow- including VOIP? as in on prem VOIP? yeah.. nah.

Right? On prem VoIP with a system that's been out for years and considered a total failure. The equipment has a bad reputation already.

The free Unifi controller already does that. That a FREE piece of functionality is shoved onto your router does not improve it in any way, whatsoever.

You are acting like this is providing some kind of value that you don't already have without the Dream Machine. It's not. It's just marketing using the emotional response to bundling make you feel like you should pay for something you already have.

Well... the play is it's all self contained. No need to host a machine somewhere to run the controller, no need to host a machine somewhere to do VOIP, no need to host a machine somewhere to do access, etc, etc.

but bringing all that in-house - you have to consider the risk factors.
