Proxmox in 2022

@brandon220 we are currently on Hyper-v for 2 VM's (and one physical DC that bit the bucket, see my other posts) I'm interested in Proxmox as well to replace Hyper-V as we do have one silly need for 1 or 2 on prem servers (more for development/testing and provisioning phones than anything) so keep us posted

I just migrated two VMs off Hyper-V 2019 to Proxmox. Overall was pretty straight forward, biggest challenge is just understanding your aren't dealing with HDD files anymore - you import you VHDs into Proxmox and Proxmox deals with the filesystem.

I've got it up and running again in my lab. Have 1 Fedora server VM running as a test. So far, so good.

"That's the way we have always done it is NEVER the right answer"When I first peeked at Proxmox, it must have been about 7 years ago. It was not ready for primetime. I just started dipping my toes back in that pool in a homelab

Even if it was free, it wasn't the best pricing, lol. Since better products are free. VMware is NEVER even a "good" cost because it is never free. Everyone except VMware is free. If pricing is considered in any form, Vmware is right out the window. It's not always the wrong answer, but for pricing... that's always a huge negative in VMware's court.

YEah, seven years ago it wasn't ready. Not bad, but not ready. Today, it feels like the go to option.

I been working with Proxmox 3 years now and it is solid OS. I like it a lot been running some basic VMs on it not to fancy works like a charm.

Proxmox works but we prefer xcp-ng.
Virtualization itself is a commodity so it's the tools around it that matters most. We have many hosts and xcp-ng is the best fit for our needs.

What's amazing is that even when it has become a commodity, VMware has failed to make it feel that way. It still feels like it has all the problems of a one off, special case product that the never managed to polish.

I've moved most of our important stuff onto Proxmox over the last 2 to 3 years. It's been great.
I've been using the PBS as well for the backups - it's so much better than manually doing full backups of VMs (which was the case with KVM and it's tools).So thumbs up for Proxmox from me.

We've been using PBS too for backups more recently.
