We currently use Veeam and we plan on staying with them, but I was just wondering about backup exec. We used to use BE and planned to upgrade to BE 2012 but when we started using it, it was just sooo bad we moved to Veeam.
We followed the same path as you and couldnt be happier. My IT deportment was all Symantec when I started here. I slowly got rid of all their crappy products... PC Anywhere, BackupExec, and SEP.
When I first showed my boss Veeam, he was in disbelief how easy it was.
We still use SEP and I cant wait until we switch. I think that we are going to go with Webroot when we do.
We use Sophos. I absolutely love the AV, but their support isnt that great. The good news is that I only have to contact support once a year or so.

PC anywhere was a awesome product back in the day and then it just kinda of went away.
The way we were using it when I started here was the same way, you would use VNC. We only used it on our local network. That was my first project, deploying VNC via AD and removing PCA

@lance 2012 is still pretty poor compared to Unitrends and Veeam is my default choice for VM backup. BE 2014 is "imminent" but Im not even looking at it.

I think BE needs to stop the bleeding at 2012 and come out with a new backup product.

Yeah. It isnt always a bad thing to ditch an unrepairable sinking ship.
Microsoft has had to do this before (ME and Vista), just reinvent the product.

I'm not sure I agree that MS ditched Vista... Windows 7 as far as I could tell was Vista SP3 or was it SP4? In the end Vista was totally usable to me.

I'm not sure I agree that MS ditched Vista... Windows 7 as far as I could tell was Vista SP3 or was it SP4? In the end Vista was totally usable to me.
They "reinvented" it. They took all the focus away from Vista and used it towards Windows 7. Once they had Windows 7 down, they silently patched and fixed Vista
Symantec could learn from that.

I ended up using Vista for years. It really was fine by the later service packs.

I used Backup Exec recently for an environment whose policy required tape. It worked quite well for the purpose. If you need backups to removable media, Backup Exec is the way to go.
Now, before someone talks about how Veeam can do tape now, yes, I've tried it. It's ok. However, if I had an environment that was entirely virtual and required tape, I'd just have Backup Exec back up my Veeam repository.
