Weekend plans... Meeting a friend and his family on Friday at some party, birthday BBQ with friends on Saturday, BBQ at my parents place. Another carnivore weekend, so much for trying to not eat meat. BTW: The party on friday probably includes a BBQ...

Why would you try to not eat meat??? Are you some kind of hippie or something?

Me? A hippie? No, we just had so much meat in the past. And really, BBQ on three days in a row is a bit hard

Haha... that's basically what our family reunion is. Three days of meat, alcohol, cards, and lawn games.

Room for any more family members?

Probably? It was the beginning of this month, I missed it for obvious reasons, but I'm sure if you guys want to come pick hops in the fall there would be room for you.

You didn't say anything about manual labor...

That's the family thing. Work hard, drink hard.

Meh. I just wanted to cash in on BBQ and yard games.

I prefer to just drink twice as hard.

I will pick hops from sunup to sundown... but I may want to pocket a handful.

Unfortunately, this year, our hops didn't do so well. We missed a few weeks, death and birth in the family, that were critical to their development. All the infrastructure work is done this year though so next year we don't have nearly as much to do.

The changing weather probably didn't help any, either.

That's too bad. As I understand it, the demand from breweries in the US is outrunning the hop farmers' supply. It's a grower's market, especially if you can provide a quality, premium product.

And even moreso in NY where NY grown hops are a legal requirement.

I've talked to brewers who have flown all over the country to procure enough quality hops for their operations. And these are guys from brewpubs and tiny craft breweries. I can't imagine the effort it takes for the larger craft breweries.

@scottalanmiller isn't NY a great place to grow hops because of soil and weather? I know they don't do well down here in the crazy summer heat.

Normally yes. Hops and marijuana share growing conditions and pot grows native and well in NY. NY is a top hops producer traditionally. This summer was a drought, though. Not super hot, just very dry.

Funny... pot grows really well here, and I know some of the folks that have tried to grow hops here know how to grow pot too. I figured NY had a wetter climate, like the PNW.

Not as humid as the tri-state, but on the humid side. Remember... UPstate NY isn't just bounded by the Great Lakes, it is filled with the Finger Lakes. Water everywhere.

We had plenty of water thanks to a mountain full of natural springs... we just didn't get a chance to train them and they spent too much time on the ground. We also weren't able to cut the stringers (the bines that grow that aren't the primary ones) so it wasted a lot of energy growing out and not up.

I guess all viney crops need training and assistance to do their best.

Lots of nothing planned. Just the kids and I hanging out with my dad around the farm. Maybe I'll spend some time going through the storage unit.

Getting a big batch of serrano peppers today, gonna lightly smoke them (pecan and mesquite), then they get pickled. If I also get some jalapenos, gonna make some poppers (cheddar/cream cheese/bacon/scallion).

Oh nice, I love the taste of serrano. People often thing that I don't like spicy food because I don't like the taste of jalapeno. But I tend to like a lot of spicier things, like Serrano and Datil.

I am in the wedding of my childhood best friend. Festivities start tonight. Should be fun 🙂
