It seems the best way is create a outbound route that goes nowhere?

You can also block it at the SIP level with your provider. Do that along with international dialing, save yourself some headache.

This is the right way to do it. Over complicating your routes will only make life harder at some future point when you try to troubleshoot something.

The above said, I do have one client with an ungodly number of inbound routes. Using technology to solve a people problem.

The old service manager refused to enforce the rule stating that the service techs were not allowed to call the main switchboard. So the new service manager told me to force the issue.

Now all the techs get force routed to the service dispatch hunt group. A few tried to get around it by using their personal cell. The operator complained to the new service manager and their personal cells were blacklisted from calling in at all to the main number. 🙂

If the SIP provider offers this, definitely. Using a route to do it stops your extensions (if compromised) from using them. Blocking them at the SIP carrier stops your PBX if compromised from calling them.

Neither stops you if the SIP provider is the one making the calls (looking at you, Megapath.)
