      eWeek reports on a talk from Canonical and Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth who talks about the future of Ubuntu Linux 16.10 which is coming in six months, what it might include and talks about the importance of security and why Ubuntu will never compromise on security and will not include back doors.

            They had the ads from Amazon, so his point is they are tracking what you do to give you ads. You can turn it off, but it was a big deal to him that it was automatically turned on.

            And also the non GNU completely free nonsense.

                They've turned them off by default now. In the settings there is a search section or something. You have to be using Unity for them to work, it's some kind of integration with Amazon.

                  I was actually just reading it (the articles are here and here)

                  Pretty much Ubuntu designed the system so if you were searching in the Dash menu, Amazon search results would come up, if someone bought something from Amazon, a portion of the proceeds would go directly to Ubuntu.

                    Hmmm, if he cares so much about security he should disable the Universe repository, it's full of security holes. Essentially, installing anything from there is an exercise in installing a backdoor.

                    Of course, there's not much choice, you want that software to be available. Though choice 😉
